Portage Industrial Exhibition 148th Anniversary

This has been a challenging year for everyone so far. We have all been affected by the pandemic in one way or another. With so many events being canceled or postponed, it has been hard on many groups, and the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, exhibitors & fair attendees have all been feeling the loss of this year’s 148th fair. Out of the safety for all those people, we chose to postpone our 148th fair until 2021. Normally this past weekend would have brought excitement, music, family entertainment, achievements for exhibitors, & the thrills of Select Shows midway. We can only plan for next year to be even better to make up for our postponement of this year’s fair.

This year with the pandemic’s restrictions, we were not able to hold our fair in the normal way. Being a family oriented fair, we have instead moved to doing some online contests for everyone. Information can be found on our website (www.portageex.com) & on our Facebook page (Portage Ex), where we will be running the pictures for each entry. Each category will take submissions for a week. After each category closes, we will choose the winner with the most likes on their picture submitted & they will receive a fair pass for the Portage Ex 2021 & a Portage Ex Frisbee. There will be 20 contests running from June 22 – November 8th. Categories are listed below.

The Portage Industrial Exhibition would like to congratulate the Oakville & Portage Beef Clubs on their successful online Market Steer & Lamb sale this year. You can see some of the livestock that the 4H members have worked with this year on our Facebook page. We have always been a proud supporter of 4-H and their annual sale. Postponement of the 2020 Portage Fair

With a history dating back almost to the origins of Canada as a nation, the Portage Industrial Exhibition Association has been celebrating the significance of our region’s agricultural heritage since 1872.  The Portage Fair has become an integral part of the summer for Portage la Prairie and District. As a result the July 2020 edition was scheduled to be the 148th consecutive year of fair activities in Portage la Prairie.

As the Covid-19 situation evolved, our organization has done its best to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best.  While we are pleased to see that the situation in Manitoba has improved to the point where a ‘Phased Approach to Restoring Services’ has been adopted by the Province of Manitoba – which we fully support – its release also brought with it the confirmation that it would neither be possible nor responsible to proceed with a gathering such as ours at this time.

For this reason, and for the safety and well-being of our community, attendees and sponsors, it is the decision of the directors of the Portage Industrial Exhibition Association to postpone the 2020 Portage Fair.

All of our facilities will also remain closed for the foreseeable future.  In addition, the Portage Ex Campground will remain closed until May 31, 2020.

We will endeavor to consider other activities on our grounds over the summer months, assuming all restrictions for public gatherings as set by the province can be met or exceeded.

Throughout the years, there has never been an interruption in the presentation of the annual agricultural fair, which stands today as Manitoba’s longest continuously running fair, something we can all take pride in.

Remember to mark your calendars for the 2021 Portage Fair from July 9th to 11th, 2021.

We look forward to seeing you next year!

Katlyn Richaud

President

Portage Industrial Exhibition Association
